It was nice to see my "little man" again after several weeks. We checked in and shot the breeze for awhile, then played the ole switcheroo the motorcycles and equipment in the parking lot game, from one trailer to the other, as the hotel staff watched. We made our traditional trip to Wal-mart for supplies and general "aimless wondering through the aisles" routine.

Thursday we lined up in the staging area at the track and moved in at 12 noon sharp. The AMA staff was professional and helpful throughout the process, a much welcomed change from 2009. Setup was as usual and we finished early and left for the hotel and another trip to Wal-mart. Alex dined on food by the pound from the deli and I made my visit to the Sub-Way.

Friday morning the sun was shinning, the birds were singing and it was time to go to work. We struggled through the practice round, not quite sure why, but had the first qualifying session to get things sorted further. On the first lap of qualifying the lower radiator hose came loose while in a turn causing a highside which landed Alex on his head, Arai helmets are absolutely the best!. Somewhere throughout the tumbling he broke a bone in his foot and of course the bike not wanting to be outdone trashed itself with some tumbling of it's own. We were done for the day. Off to the urgent care center for some x-rays and confirmation of suspicions. Splint, crutches and back to the hotel to drop the "little man" off, then back to the track to start cleaning up the mess. Back at the hotel we took off the splint and packed the foot in ice all night long.

Saturday morning Andrew arrived from Jacksonville to help me crew. I had been at the track since 4 a.m. making sure all was right. Later that morning Alex managed to crutch over to the bike and qualify 27th, then back to the trailer and the ice. The first Daytona Sportbike race he managed a 23rd place. Back to the hotel and the ice.

Sunday started early for me again. We had a short practice session and off to the autograph session they went. We had light up pens to give the fans supplied by Buztronics and they were a huge hit! Back to the trailer and more ice until it was time for the fan walk. The race was tough and Alex managed a 24th place which given the circumstances was a gift.

Thanks to Andrew for sticking it out with us and all the great help. Our first Daytona 200 placed us under the lights on a chilly night. For this at one time seemingly unreachable milestone in our roadracing adventures was achieved with the help of family and friends. My cousin Lucy and her husband Robert came to the rescue along with a couple of compatriots from the Danis Group, Rob and Andrew. Andrew recruited long time college buddy Jim who flew down from Ohio to help. Next thing you know we actually had a pit crew. These folks had to take time from their families, work and not to mention their wallets to help us out during this race. With little practice and lots of enthusiasm they helped make it happen.

We had the good fortune of having Mr. and Mrs. Wikle along with Paul James as garage neighbors and an occasional visit from a variety of interesting characters. When all was said and done Alex had collected an 18th place finish after starting 32nd. Not a bad showing for our first Daytona 200. Next round for us will be Road Atlanta.

Another WERA race from VIR

WERA at VIR March 19-21 2010

We spent the last 3 days at VIR with the nice folks from WERA. The weather was terrific and although it threatened Sunday afternoon, the rain just passed us by. This was a good outing for us. I have finally figured out
how to work with the Yamaha R6 and Alex is hungry for the hunt. Every race this weekend he was grided at the back of the pack. There is no qualifying, you grid based on the date you register for the race. Since we register at the track we always end up in the back of the grid. This time however Alex spent the races riding forward position after position until the 6 lap race was over. A couple of the races were 2 wave starts with our entry at the back of the second wave. So needless to say he was on his game to race forward for one 2nd and two 4th place finishes. Last year at this event he was finishing 18th and 20th.

This morning Alex is on his way home to Georgia and back to school. AMA is at Auto Club Speedway in California this weekend. We will be back with AMA at Road Atlanta on April 16th-18th. Still lots of work to do......GO ARMY!!!!!!!

Welcome 502nd Military Intelligence Company, "Ravens"

Well it's official, maybe, if you guys will have us, then it looks like the 502nd Military Intelligence Company will have a motorcycle race team running in AMA Pro Racing for the 2010 season. It's not a big team, it's not a fancy team. Just a couple of guys from Virginia proud and thankful for all of you. A dad and son, traveling in their little truck pulling their trailer with a couple of bikes inside. The bikes may have some dents and scratches. The suspension settings may not always be correct but we race with heart and pride every step of the way. We would like to share our times on the race circuit with all of you. Some fun, lots of confusion, plenty of hard work and a little bit of home. So if you'll take us then we'll accept. We will run "Ravens" on the sides of those bikes, stand tall and tell all, the work you do to help keep our country safe. If you have questions about the tracks, bikes, people, travels or anything you see on the blog let us know. Take a look at last years stuff and get an idea of who we are. If it's a go then the "Ravens" will fly the high banks of Daytona International Speedway in March 2010......Good hunting...Go Army!!

Here We Go Again

First of all, this holiday season I tried to keep it simple. Halloween I was a villain, Thanksgiving cranberry sauce from a can and a turkey leg. Christmas, however, saw me as father of the bride. There was family, food, dance and cheer for all. To see my "little mermaid", happy and protected in the arms of her prince, a fairytale moment. These kids just keep finding ways to make us proud . Seeing my uncles after 15 years convinced me that truly good men remain so, no matter how much hair they lose. I suddenly realized, standing there, with all the old friends gathered, that my time travels have been meaningful after all. A defining moment in my life.

Next, in the wisdom of the military, The "Regulars by god" became part of something else, which I am still trying to figure out. Net effect, 2010 will see us filled with pride and racing hard as "Ravens". Yes the 502nd Military Intelligence Company. Judging by their company emblem/mascot they are as committed, resourceful and scary as the Little Dude and I pretend to be.

Meanwhile, Honda and Kawasaki said no more, to the "economy", or perhaps other shenanigans and will not race AMA Pro for 2010. The Little Dude and I played the old, we are going to Daytona, no we're not going to Daytona, ok maybe we should go to Daytona this year game. So, after much consideration and preparation, here we go again, back to Daytona. We had no suspension issues that could not be corrected and learned a great deal about gearing. Finishes were 2nd, 6th, 6th in CCS/ASRA and a DNF in AMA Supersport as a result of a cold tire. I could at this time embark on an audienceless monologue questioning the wisdom of having bikes and riders sit with warmers unplugged and tires cooling on a 50degree day for 15 minutes before sending them to race, however, I will not. This is the series we race, some things are good, some not so good. We thank our friends, family, God and the guys and gals that fight to keep us free. No matter who the President is, how much the legislators lie, what numbers the bred, born and forever parasitically existing sectors of our populace reach; I am still proud to be American and of those who serve. The thought of them and God strengthens me. Finally, crosses mounted on elevated city structures will never be offensive. Those that fear them enough to want them removed should be subjected to governments whose founding principles do not include such "insults to their liberal sensitivities". On the 11th we awakened to a new day full of possibilities and hope because of his and the sacrifice of others like him. For this September 11th no buildings fell, no accounts of loved ones on cell phones saying helpless goodbyes forever, no planes at the Pentagon or in the fields of Pennsylvania. My daughter remembers his guidance and encouragement during that first West Point "right of passage" known as "beast". I have only seen his picture but am moved by the impact of his short journey on the "earthly trail". So little time, so well respected, such richness of spirit. I am saddened, I am thankful, I am awestruck and inspired, I am a better person because of you. For the emptiness which is your absence is quickly replaced by the feel of something grander, your example. Your honor, commitment and selflessness helps define our lives. The gift of standing tall as the flag waves and knowing that this country is and will remain free. The comfort, that though costly, we as a country will survive. To you Lieutenant Tyler E. Alex was just a " little Guy with a Big attitude the first time we saw those bikes streak across the front straight. I remember the chill as the hair on the back of my neck and arms stood up. Just an eye blink later, here we are, still hard to imagine, a vertical growth curve.

This round turned out a bit different than we had expected, but, so do most things in life. The usual logistical challenges for me along with other happenings which included locking Alex in the trailer by mistake prior to DSB Race #1. I was on the grid cursing when my cell phone went off. I ran all the way back to find him beating on the door from the inside. We barely made the race. That's what happens when you rush, at least no axle bolts have been left loose yet. We were visited by M.T. Robinson, Sergeant First Class, United States Army , the Triangle Cycles Girls, a reporter, a bunch of terrific fans and the ones that pay for it all, a few of my patients.

Qualifying was poor and although the bikes felt ok, we could not get beyond the 1:34 barrier. Alex pushed hard then harder but to no avail. He felt it was "the rider", I felt it was an unknown and we both were quite confused. A defining moment in the search for greatness, a lonely place, an opportunity for growth, call it what you will. We were dazed and confused. Finishes were DSB #1 24th place DSB #2 22nd place SS 16th. Well at least we were not involved in any of the wrecks, the fans at the autograph session were great. Samantha, an umbrella girl for M1 Entertainment and Lauren, umbrella girl for Triangle Cycles helped improve the now "big Guy with a Big attitudes mood" . The Dunlop front tire in Supersport class worked without a flaw, but no explanation could be found for the 1:34 barrier.

Now I have been on several occasions the cause of mishap for Alex, this has been my growth as much as his. Surely, I could not again be the cause for the 1:34 barrier. We went back to VIR a week after big Kahuna to try and sort things out. So after running both bike with all kinds of changes his times were getting worse, what in the blazes was happening. "This kind of reminds me of when we tried to put that slipper clutch in the SV", I said, "remember, I couldn't go any faster and neither could you". "We took the clutch out then everything went back to normal". When was the last time we replaced the friction plates in these bikes? Well the answer was easy, NEVER. We have run an entire season without changing the clutch. So there it was, I was certain, Alex skeptical ,maybe, plain as day, the 1min34 second barrier? The friction plates were worn and glazed the clutch plates blue and purple. The springs were all below limit. Has this clutch been slipping all this time? See you in New Jersey boys...... We find ourselves back home in Virginia at the event that started us down the roadracing path, Virginia International Raceway and The Big Kahuna Nationals. It has been quite a year so far for us all. A West Point graduation, a daughters wedding in December, a future son in laws return from Iraq, a son racing the steel horses around these tracks. Many sleepless nights and bloodshot eyed days, the pride of reaching far, deep and beyond.

The bikes are fixed, the paint is shiny, the motors strong, the bodies fit and minds clear. This weekend with a fathers unimaginable pride and admiration I will raise our flag. We will think of 2nd Lieutenant Stephanie Lazo and 1st Lieutenant Ilya Ivanov somewhere doing what they must. We will think of "The Regulars" and we will let all we meet know. Alex will do what he now does best and carry the message of tradition and sacrifice on the sides of those bikes, more so in his heart. For now partly by chance, choice or default we are joined to something much greater, this family we call "The Regulars by God"
.......GO ARMY!

Heartland Park, Topeka Kansas

It all started Thursday at 1:30 a.m., I thought someone had thrown sand in my eyes as the alarm clock did its thing. Stumbled down the stairs and into the shower where I seriously considered bribing Alex into taking up ballet instead of racing. The hour and a half drive to the airport was uneventful and I sat around waiting for the check in kiosk to go active. We did the take of the shoes and belt thing at security and off to the gate we went. Boarding at 5 a.m., wait in the aisle while the fat guy three people up squeezes into his seat and the petite gal in front of him struggles to fit her bag in the overhead compartment. Why do I always have to sit next to the stinky guy with sandals, never a pretty girl. With all the traveling this year, never have I sat next to a pretty girl, oh well. Stop in Atlanta with all its organized confusion, take a train to the next gate, wait then on to Kansas City. Take a bus to the car rental facility where I tell the lady at Avis my name and reservation number. I tell her "I am taking the cheapest car without coverage and I do not want to purchase any gas". She says "yes sir", then tries to upgrade me to a larger vehicle with damage protection and a prepaid tank of gas. Out to the car, walk around, document damage and out the gate I go, finally on the way to Topeka.

I arrive at Heartland Park at 10:30 a.m. . Alex comes zipping out to the gate on the scooter and enthusiastically slides in the gravel and smiles. Credentials and parking permit in hand, into the track we go. Entering the track always reminds me of the movie Gladiator, let the games begin.

I get to the paddock spot and start my routine of picking up and organizing the trailer and equipment. Alex has the bikes out and the canopy up. He has already had a session on the track and is happy with how the bike is feeling and his times so far. Next session on the track the sliding started as it seems to every round, we change settings, get advice, change tires and always end up confused and apprehensive about the next morning.

Up at 4 a.m. to get a better game face on and finish prepping the bikes. Both bikes ready, body work hung and painted, lets go to work. We continue to tune and adjust throughout the morning. Sometime after lunch Alex wrecks, rider not hurt and we continue with the other bike while fixing the wrecked one. Qualifying for Daytona Sportbike goes well and we finish the day at the Golden Coral.

Saturday starts at 4 a.m. , qualifying and a race today. Supersport qualifying goes ok. Daytona Sportbike race gets redflagged after 2 laps. On the restart 2 riders fall in front of Alex on the warm-up lap and he runs into 1 of them. He gets up and keeps going then wrecks about 6 turns later. That's one way to get time on Speed Channel. More repair work, the night ends very late.

Sunday, 4 a.m., get to the track and setup. Double check all the repair work from few hours ago. Warm up session, new tires, oil change on bikes and ready to race. Bike on the grid early and then the "fan walk". Lots of pictures of the bike and questions about "The Regulars". Someone told us that "grunts and tankers" don't get along. Daytona Sportbike and Supersport races were the best of the season for us. Alex worked hard and fought the whole way. The races were back to back so he jumped off one bike onto the other and went. Finishes were 25th and 9th, raced forward from qualifying in both classes.

Monday 1:30 a.m., well up and out, off to Kansas City Airport. Return the car at Avis, plane to Atlanta then Greensboro then to the office for afternoon hours. Next round, VIR. Go Army!

"The Regulars, by God" (1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment)

We raise our flag each morning , and lower it each eve and reflect.
Thinking of all of those that serve and sacrifice, marveling at the light that motivates them, the spirit which pushes them forward.
Admiring their character standing firm in the face of the unknown and often adverse. Wheels up by 5:30a.m. ,after a stop in Cincinnati, arrived in Columbus at 9:30 a.m..

Drove to Lexington where I met Alex already at the track setting up. We pitted next to Mr. Parker, Billy and Ricky. These are the nicest people you will ever meet, got to try goober wheels for the first time and got fed some pretty good sausage. Alex worked hard and improved his times significantly. We had a tire issue which led to a wreck and trashed one of the bikes. Fortunately no injuries so he raced hard, including back to back Daytona Sportbike and Supersport races on Sunday. Finishes were 29th, 31st and 7th so things are getting better. Thanks to AMA and Ed Sorbo for measuring our frame after the crash and determining it was straight.

Left for home on Monday at 2 a.m. and was back in town by noon to work afternoon office hours. Got to see 2nd Lieutenant Stephanie Lazo for a couple of hours that evening, before she left for Fort Bening, Georgia. Soon it's off to Heartland Park in Kansas for the next race round. In the meantime need to get some things done around the house maintenance wise. Alex is on the road headed for Heartland and will try to fix the crashed bike. During Fridays qualifying session I ended up putting my TriangleCycles.com Yamaha R6 in 38th position on the grid. Saturday came and so did the rains bringing with it the challenges of a wet race. The race started and I had a great run into turn one putting me into 22 place by the end of the first lap. This race was a battle of attrition and resulted in about 16 crashes. I went in the race with a game plan and a really good pace. I felt really comfortable on the bike and we had a good setup. The pace was fast and the track was extremely slippery which was why there where so many wrecks. After 13 laps of carnage the checkered flag flew and I brought it home in 16th place! This was our best result of the season and my Dad and I were really happy. I would like to thank my dad most of all for the amazing effort and support. He has worked really hard and continues to develop our effort into a competitive team. I would also like to thank all of my sponsors TriangleCycles.com, Arai helmets, EBC brakes, and Silkolene Racing Lubricants who have helped with our effort this season. Also a special thanks to Ed Sorbo for his wisdom and advice.

West Point Graduation Class 2009

Four years ago we sat in a large auditorium while the Cadet in charge addressed the families, "you have 30 seconds to say goodbye".

I stood and looked to see my daughter hugging her mom and brother. When she turned I saw the tears, as I fought my own. I felt her arms around my neck and then, "I love you dad". I heard a voice in my chest tell her, "everything you need is within you, I love you, be proud".

She stepped back, stood straight, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. Picking up her bag and walking down the aisle then out the door, she, not once looked back. I could not help but notice how much taller she stood than earlier that morning. I had never felt so empty or been so lost.

The challenges were many, for her, a warriors sacrifice. So it seems days became years and today 23rd May 2009 we sit surrounded by the granite of proud tradition and commitment which is this institution. For moms and dads may think they understand, but only those with the courage to reach beyond their perceived capabilities posses the right to be a part.

The band it played, the names were called, the spirit of all the greats resonated with every drumbeat. I stood and looked, once more battling tears. I saw her face, the ramrod walk, the smart salute. I heard the cheers, saw the friendships, the respect of those equally worthy. She had earned her way to this place, ignoring the long since forgotten and ridiculed skeptics, forever becoming a part of something truly great. Returning to me on this day something long ago lost. I had never felt so proud or been so complete.

With a fathers pride and respect for his little girl,
Congratulations,
2nd Lieutenant Stephanie Ann Lazo
United States Army

Daytona Recap

Daytona was the first round of the 2009 AMA roadracing season and also my first round as a pro. The weekend kicked off with CCS racing which I used as practice to get used to riding the Yamaha R6 and to help get the bike setup right. This was my first race weekend on a 600 and there was a lot of things to be done to get things rolling. My Dad and I really struggled at the beginning of the weekend with suspension settings and the bike geometry. That's when we ran into Ed Sorbo and he really helped to get us going in the right direction. I learned a lot of valuable information on bike setup and good habits on and off the track. After the CCS weekend ended the AMA weekend started and I must say that I was really excited. We kept working on the bike setup and the lap times kept coming down. I qualified in 16th place for AMA Pro Supersport. This was only my second experience with qualifying, the first time being at the Suzuki cup finals in 2008. I was pleased with the effort and really pumped for the race. At the start of the race my bike stalled out on the line due to a mapping issue but I managed to get it started and chase down the rest of the riders into turn one. The rest of the race went surprisingly well and I managed to fight back to 11th place! Needless to say we were very happy with the way things went, especially since we left with our bikes in tact, in good health, and some valuable championship points. We also came to some important conclusions on what the bike needed to be competitive this season. So that's what happened at Daytona this year. After that, it was off to Road Atlanta!

First Blog Post

Well, this as you can tell from the title will be my first blog post.
